Debunking Common Skincare Myths

The internet is full of skincare advice, but not all of it is good advice. As dermatologists, we hear a lot of myths. Let's debunk a few!
Myth 1: "Toothpaste is a good spot treatment for pimples." Fact: This is a terrible idea! The ingredients in toothpaste can be very irritating and may worsen inflammation and even cause chemical burns, leading to more hyperpigmentation.
Myth 2: "If it's expensive, it must be better." Fact: The price of a product doesn't determine its effectiveness. What matters are the ingredients and formulation. Many affordable, drugstore brands recommended by dermatologists are incredibly effective.
Myth 3: "People with dark skin don't need sunscreen." Fact: This is one of the most dangerous myths. While darker skin has more melanin, which offers some protection, it is not enough to prevent sun damage, premature aging, and skin cancer. Everyone needs sunscreen, every single day.
When in doubt, always consult a board-certified dermatologist in Ibadan for advice you can trust.
